Message Recap
We continued our sermon series, "This is the Way," today by spending time in 1 John 1:1-7. Megan began her sermon with the story of a young woman desiring to turn back to her faith journey. In this story, Megan emphasized how often we think we need to climb a mountain to find our way back, but we really just need to take one step at a time as Jesus walks with us.
In these verses, Megan taught that John is bearing witness to the conclusive, material proof that the Word became flesh and lived among us. This, Jesus in the flesh, is what sets our Christian faith apart from all other faiths and is what John was trying to emphasize. John is showing us that we can have fellowship with Jesus and that He wants fellowship with us!
God desires for us to have more than knowledge, He wants intimacy with us. So what is that like? Megan shared how God is light and love. His light is the light that exposes in love. In Him, we can be fully exposed while fully confident that we are fully loved. We may feel compelled to hide in the darkness of our guilt and shame, but she challenged us to let the light expose us in His love, "His light illuminates, and that light is Love." We are secure in His love and need not hide. In his loving illuminating light is where we are able to find deep, intimate fellowship with Jesus.
As we experience this intimacy with Jesus, we are invited to walk in the light as He is in the light. Matthew 5:14-16 says, "You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."
We will not walk a sinless life, but we can walk a deeply intimate life with Jesus that shines His light into the darkness. Megan concluded, "This world is swimming in darkness, and we can hide or move toward it so that our light makes way for people to see God."
