Inductive Bible Study
Universal Group Guide

We're conducting a short survey and want to hear from you. Would you take three minutes and fill out the survey here?

      Running short on time?

Feel free to use these questions.

      1. Read Luke 15:11-14. Discuss as a group what stands out to you after hearing today's message.
      2. Pastor Dave shared a prayer that David prayed about waking up. Psalm 139:23-24 in The Message version reads, "Investigate my life, O God, find out everything about me; Cross-examine and test me, get a clear picture of what I'm about; See for yourself whether I've done anything wrong—then guide me on the road to eternal life." Pray this scripture as a group. What thoughts and feelings come to the surface through this prayer?
      3. Have you ever been in a place where the pain of staying the same simply was too much to bear, and you knew you had to change? How did God show up in that season?

      Message Recap

Today we continued in our series, Finding Your Way Back to God, with Pastor Dave Dummit's teaching on Luke 15:11-14, specifically verse 20. A few weeks ago we talked about waking up to longing—the moment we realize there has got to be more to this life. Last week we talked about waking up to regret—the moment we realize the impact of our poor decisions. We also talked about the things that keep us asleep in our unhealthy decisions. Today, Pastor Dave talked bout waking up to help so we can change.

Change is difficult but not impossible. Typically there are four things that compel us to change.

      1. We are hurt enough that we have to.
Change happens when the pain of staying the same exceeds the pain of changing.

      2. We see enough we are inspired to.
Sometimes the way God wants to help us change is to show us something that inspires us.

      3. We learn enough that we want to.
Sometimes God helps us by educating us on how needed change is and how possible it really is.

      4. We receive enough that we are able to.
God is running toward us as we run toward Him. We're never too far off or gone, and when we accept His pursuit of us, we experience deep, everlasting change.

Pastor Dave concluded his message by encouraging us that we can always come home. God is scanning the horizon, watching for us, longing for us to return.

      Discussion Questions

      4. Point two in Pastor Dave's sermon was that sometimes we need to be inspired to change. Often other people's stories inspire us. What stories in the Bible have inspired you over the years?
      5. Pastor Dave's final point was that God runs after us. Is there a place in your life where you need God to run after you right now?
      6. Is anyone in your group feeling far from God today? Take time to pray for that group member.
      7. Is there anything else from the message you hoped we would discuss today?

        Live It Out

        • At the end of his sermon, Pastor Dave challenged us to take our next step of faith. What is your next step this week? Is it to join a serving team? Is it to join a Rooted group? Maybe you need to stop running from God? Discuss as a group what you can do this week to get one step closer to where God is calling you.
