Message Recap
Megan Marshman taught us that Jesus never saw people as an interruption. He sat with them, listened, and asked questions. He was full of compassion; He moved beyond empathy to enter into people’s circumstances and care for them. And He cultivated compassion in His disciples because He planned to use them to spread His message of love.
We are also His disciples. We can point people to Jesus when we look at the ways He shared His compassion, receive it personally, and selflessly look for opportunities to offer it to others.
Discussion Questions
- Read Luke 9:1–6. Jesus equipped His disciples with nothing but His power and authority so they would be dependent on Him and those around them. How has God equipped you in life? How has He used other people to equip you?
- Read Luke 9:7–20. Herod asks about Jesus, “Who, then, is this I hear such things about?” Who is Jesus to you?
- Jesus often withdrew from the crowd to be alone. What are the benefits of finding moments of solitude in your week? What could this look like, practically?
- What compels you to show compassion for others?
- How has God shown compassion to you? How have you experienced His compassion through other people?
- Read Luke 9:23–24. What does it look like to “take up [our] cross daily and follow {Jesus]?”
Live it Out
- Even when Jesus sought moments of solitude to be with His Father, he was open to interruptions. This week, look for opportunities to share His compassion with others, even in the midst of getting things done. Tell your group how God showed up!
- Think of a time when you were lonely and felt unseen. Then, imagine Jesus sitting in that moment with you—because He was actually there. What difference does His presence make?
- Ask God to bring to mind someone in your life who needs compassion. Consider how you can enter into their situation, perhaps by sitting with them, listening, and asking them questions—just as Jesus did.
- Is there another way God is calling you to live out the message this week?
