Message Recap
Pastor Shawn Williams continued our series Overflow: The 9 Traits of a Spirit-Filled Life with the trait of goodness. Pastor Shawn reminded us that God wants to produce these nine traits of the Spirit within us. While culture may not glorify goodness, God's goodness is an attractive goodness that makes God through us attractive.
1. Only God is good.
Pastor Shawn challenged us when he shared that Jesus said in Mark 10:18, "Why do you call me good? Only God is truly good." God is the only one who is good, perfect, flawless, impeccable, faultless and without defect. We, on the other hand, have plenty of flaws, imperfections and shortcomings. Our standard of goodness comes from God alone. And in our own lives, we will have some good, but there will be gaps.
2. Our good always has a gap.
If we are not careful, we can compartmentalize our lives, and each looks slightly different—our work life, home life, social life, and spiritual life. Another word for goodness is integrity, and for followers of Jesus, to live with integrity is to make sure Jesus is at the center of every part of our lives. The truth is, there is often a gap in our goodness, in our integrity, but the Holy Spirit can fill them if we invite Him in.
3. Our good comes from God.
People begin to look like those that they spend the most time with. As believers in Jesus, we must spend time with God. and invite Him to search our hearts. The more time we spend with Him, the more we look like Him and the more the Holy Spirit can impart God's goodness to us.
Pastor Shawn concluded that none of us can claim that we are good. And sometimes, we live understanding that we need to clean up our lives in order to come to God. But the opposite is actually what's true. We come to God, and through the power of the Holy Spirit, He begins to clean up our lives. Goodness, and the ability to show that goodness comes from God alone!
