Message Recap

Character and integrity are vital to gaining the support and respect of others (and leading them well). In Judges 4, we find a fair, uncompromising, truthful, and faithful leader: Deborah. While everyone did what was right in their own eyes, she stood out as a judge and prophetess, committed to the word God spoke to her. As a group let’s pray for and pursue that kind of integrity.

Discussion Questions

How does Coach John Wooden’s quote, “The true test of a man's character is what he does when no one is watching,” challenge or affirm your understanding of personal integrity?

How does Deborah’s role as a judge and prophetess, told in Judges 4, illustrate the concept of integrity in leadership? What specific actions or qualities demonstrate her integrity?

Deborah agreed to accompany Barak into battle, despite the risk to herself. What does this reveal about her leadership style and her commitment to God’s commands?

In what ways did Deborah’s actions contrast with the cultural and societal norms of her time, as described in the book of Judges?

Discuss the significance of Deborah’s story in the context of “doing what is right in one’s own eyes” versus adhering to a higher moral standard.  What resources do you personally use to understand the difference between what you think is right and what Jesus ultimately stands for?

Live it out

Close your time together by praying as a group for wisdom to navigate your personal integrity and discuss ways to support each other in this endeavor.
