Message Recap
Pastor Dave Dummit continued our series, Overflow: 9 Traits of a Spirirt-filled Life, today with the fruit of patience. He began his teaching by pointing out that for many of us, waiting is not something we naturally embrace. And yet, it seems waiting is a very important part of God's plan for us. Pastor Dave taught from 1 Samuel 16 to illustrate this very important concept.
Waiting is essential to becoming.
In this passage, David is 12 years old when Samual anointed him to be the next king of Isreal. And yet, David had to wait years until he was king. In those years, he learned how to be a leader and warrior.
Waiting patiently doesn't mean waiting passively.
Sometimes we think waiting is being still, but biblical waiting is active patience. In the years David waited to become king, he was in the fields being tested, where he grew as a shepherd and a warrior. As we wait, God calls us to do things that prepare us for the very thing we are waiting on.
Don't let waiting confuse what God has made clear.
David had the opportunity to take out King Saul and become king early. But he knew God said no one should lay a hand on Saul. So he didn't. He continued to wait. The Bible says that David was 30 years old when he became king. In Psalm 40:1-3, David wrote:
I waited patiently for the Lord;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.
He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the Lord
and put their trust in him.
Patiently waiting is not easy, but it is worth it.
