Feel free to just use these questions, rather than the whole guide.
Read Matthew 9:9–13. What people groups or professions are looked down upon in today’s culture, and why? How does God see them? How might that impact how we think about and treat them?
Have you ever met someone who lives out their spiritual convictions in a way that captivates people? What did you notice about their words, actions, etc.?
Today’s passage gives us a glimpse into how Matthew came to know Jesus. Have you met Him? Have you ever shared your story? Take time today or next week to allow everyone to briefly share the story of how they met Jesus.
Group Reconnect
When it comes to snow, do you prefer to shovel, snowblow, or wait until it melts?
Talk about something in your home that holds tremendous value for you. Why is it important to you? Leaders, if possible, ask your group members ahead of time to bring this item—or a picture of it—for a little “show and tell” activity.

Message Recap
Jesus was a world-changer. He crossed many social boundaries to show people God’s love. Willow wants to be known for doing the same—showing God’s love in practical ways such as meeting needs, welcoming the lonely, combating injustice, and serving others. As we live out Willow’s mission, let’s remember to:
Invite the One.
Engage the Few.
Defend the Many.
Discussion Questions
Read Matthew 9:9–13. What people groups or professions are looked down upon in today’s culture, and why? How does God see them? How might that impact how we think about and treat them?
Pastor Andy Stanley has said, “Do for one what you wish you could do for everyone.” Pause and ask God to bring to mind someone you can serve this week. Then, brainstorm ways you—individually or as a group—can meet the needs of one or several.
In what ways can people who self-identify as Christ-followers tarnish the public “packaging” or reputation of Christianity?
Have you ever met someone who lives out their spiritual convictions in a way that captivates people? What did you notice about their words, actions, etc.?
Today’s passage gives us a glimpse into how Matthew came to know Jesus. Have you met Him? Have you ever shared your story? Consider taking time today or next week to allow everyone to briefly share the story of how they met Jesus. (Some people may feel more comfortable writing it out first—see Live It Out below.)
Live it Out
Have you ever shared the story of how you met Jesus? Take time this week to write out the main points—Where were you? Who was there? What happened? How has He changed your life? Practice sharing your story with someone you trust.
Have you ever felt rejected or unworthy? Think through what you learned about Jesus in today’s passage. Consider writing out the ways Jesus interacted with Matthew, and then rewrite the sentences, replacing Matthew’s name with your own.
Example: “Even though the world rejected Matthew, Jesus chose to spend time with him. Even though the world sometimes rejects me, Jesus wants to spend time with me.”
Example: “Jesus saw value in Matthew when no one else did. Jesus sees value in me, even when no one else seems to notice me.”
What’s one step you can take this week to begin changing the world around you?
Is there another way God is calling you to live out the message this week?
