Message Recap

Sometimes, those around us make us feel like we need to accept things as they are without question. And when we do question, our curiosity can be misunderstood as divisive or doubtful.

Curt Thompson says, “Doubt is a relational feeling. It’s the feeling when a relationship has taken a turn into the unknown….” Perhaps this is how Thomas felt. At the end of John’s gospel, we see the scene that has given him the nickname of doubting Thomas.  Interestingly, though, Jesus doesn’t look at him that way. Verse 20:27 in the NIV says, “Stop doubting and believe.” In the original language, it would have been more like, “Do not become unbelieving [apistos] but believing [pistos].”

The gospel of John is all about what Jesus has done, and Thomas has been there to witness it all. And yet, he still wanted to see Jesus for himself, he couldn’t take the word of the other disciples. Jesus didn’t dismiss Thomas but instead came to him and let him see for himself.

Jesus meets us right where we are in our questions and wavering beliefs.

Discussion Questions

  1.  When feelings of doubt or questions about your faith pop up in your spirit, how do you notice that you feel?  Do questions or doubts about your faith stir feelings of guilt or shame?  Or do you make room for them and feel comfortable bringing them to God?  What in your life might be informing the way you feel in the midst of doubt?
  2. Reflect on Thomas' desire to see Jesus for himself despite hearing about the resurrection from others. How does his curiosity resonate with your own approach to faith?
  3. Consider the role of doubt in deepening your understanding of Jesus and the Bible. Share with your group about a time when you wrestled with doubt and came out the other side with more faith.  How does that change or inform your relationship with doubt?
  4. Reflect on the statement that doubting Thomas witnessed Jesus' miracles and teachings but still wanted to see Him for himself. How does this challenge common misconceptions about doubt and faith?

Live it out

Over the next week, take note when any questions pop up about your faith or doubt creeps in.  When this happens, notice how you respond in your spirit and practice welcoming those thoughts instead of judging them.  Knowing that wrestling with questions has a space in our faith development, bring them honestly before God.  Share thoughts about this practice with your group or someone you trust and encourage each other in this practice of honest engagement with God.
